Brushless DC motor control techniques  11/16/2009 2:46:00 PM
Motor designs tend to evolve slowly, and engineers are generally cautious when it comes to changing time-honored approaches. Lately though, there has been a plethora of activity around the use of advanced control techniques for Brushless DC motors (also called synchronous AC motors).

Future-proof Your OS Selection  10/22/2009 2:00:00 PM
The view of an embedded device as a fixed-function, standalone unit is changing dramatically. Devices are becoming network connected, with support for remote control, status monitoring, and in-field software upgrades. Devices currently thought of as simple are becoming complex — witness the rise of intelligent refrigerators and washing machines.

Maching Einstein  10/21/2009 12:05:00 PM
A typo in the headline? I don't think so. I'm referring to Mach's Principle. The most general idea of it is (from the wiki) "Local physical laws are determined by the large-scale structure of the universe." Einstein based his general relativity on such a concept. As engineers (I assume most of you reading this are) you are familiar with F=ma and F=G*(m1*m2/r^2).

Comparing motor-control techniques  10/13/2009 11:08:00 AM
The majority of motor-control designers are consistently and continuously looking for methods to improve efficiency while reducing system cost. These are the two main factors that are driving the efforts to improve existing motor designs and motor-control techniques. A good example of this trend is the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM).

Isolated CAN Transceiver Assures Robust Fieldbus Design  10/2/2009 12:06:00 PM
The controller area network (CAN) bus has gained popularity in applications such as process control, automation, medical, and manufacturing due to high immunity to EMI and its ability to find and repair data errors. Because a CAN bus often runs over long distance interconnecting multiple systems, isolation between the bus and the systems connected to it becomes crucial.

Bridging the Worlds of Hardware and Software with USB-based FPGA  9/10/2009 10:39:00 AM
is8-webField-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) are the most flexible and capable devices available to interface to a large variety of system devices such as memories, data acquisition (ADC/DAC), image sensors, displays, and so on.  Often, the goal is to interface these system devices to a software infrastructure running on a workstation platform...

Precision Power Control in Electro-Optics  9/8/2009 11:16:00 AM
As new laser devices become available, their complexity is met with increasingly sophisticated electronics that allow continuous refinement of precision.  As optical systems mature, new processes and procedures are made possible.  These include: lasers in medical diagnostic and treatment equipment (e.g. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)), increased sensitivity for environmental monitoring equipment...

Power over Camera Link Standard Saves Space in Factory Floor Machinery  9/2/2009 3:33:00 PM
In Japan, space is a precious commodity. In the manufacturing setting, companies strive to make the most of every square inch. To that end, the Japan Industrial Imaging Association (JIIA) led the development of the Power over Camera Link (PoCL) Interface Standard for digital cameras and frame grabbers used in Machine Vision systems.

How to Identify a Counterfeit and Genuine UL Mark on Electrical Products  8/21/2009 1:15:00 PM
ul-logos-sumFor over 100 years, Underwriters Laboratories’ ever-recognizable UL Mark has been a beacon of safety and peace of mind, guiding consumers to reputable electrical products that have been rigorously tested and approved for safe use. To this day, the mere presence – or lack of – the trusted UL Mark is enough to make or break the purchases of millions of consumers worldwide.

Microminiature Connector Solutions for Wireless Handheld Devices  8/21/2009 12:53:00 PM
Microminiature connector solutions offer compact size, low cost, high performance and flexibility – making them a perfect fit for wireless handheld devices. Below is a review of three key microminiature solutions for typical 40-circuit signal applications including relative performance, features and benefits, size attributes and rank by total cost of system solution.
